Organic Conference to Hear From Top Local Researchers

21 Oct 2009

The Organic Sector Conference from 13-15 November will hear from a wide range of local researchers at the forefront of sustainability science, says Organics Aotearoa New Zealand (OANZ).

"Presenters from AgResearch, Plant and Food Research, the University of Otago and the private sector will outline leading edge technologies which are being deployed on organic and biodynamic farms" said Dr Jon Tanner, OANZ Chief Executive Officer.

"From soils to standards, and from the risks of genetic engineering to the opportunity of global markets, more than a dozen Kiwi speakers will present the best of theoretical and applied research", Dr Tanner said.

"Research into organic-relevant technology should be a growing part of the current scientific agenda in New Zealand, ensuring that future pest and disease threats can be met without sacrificing market demands for zero agrichemical use.

"OANZ's Organic Sector Conference, with the theme 'Innovate: Go Organic', will showcase environment-enhancing technologies which can be used on all farms - whether organic or conventional.

"We will also look at how this information can be made more accessible to those looking for a better way of farming", Dr Tanner said.

The conference will also hear from international speakers including Dr Manfred Bötsch - the Director of Switzerland's Federal Office of Agriculture* - along with Dr Urs Niggli, Director of the world's largest organic research institute, American soil scientist Professor David Montgomery and biodynamic winemakers the Bret Brothers.

A full list of local and international speakers, a programme of events and online registration can be found on the conference website - www.goorganic.org.nz.
